Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, my exposure to Taiwan was limited to the ubiquitous phrase seen on all manner of toys, bikes, and electronics—"Made in Taiwan". This is not surprising given that Taiwan is Kentucky's 13th largest import partner and 5th largest export partner. As a member of our local World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, I learned of a Leadership Mission sponsored by the National World Affairs Council and The Taipei Foreign Ministry. I was accepted along with 9 other individuals from the US to participate. Our group of citizen diplomats received a briefing book about the historical and political events in Taiwan and participated in a State Department briefing before our departure. The purpose of this article is to share my impressions following this mission with my Louisville Community.
