Made in Taiwan—Perspectives from a Local Visit

Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, my exposure to Taiwan was limited to the ubiquitous phrase seen on all manner of toys, bikes, and electronics—"Made in Taiwan". This is not surprising given that Taiwan is Kentucky's 13th largest import partner and 5th largest export partner. As a member of our local World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, I learned of a Leadership Mission sponsored by the National World Affairs Council and The Taipei Foreign Ministry. I was accepted along with 9 other individuals from the US to participate. Our group of citizen diplomats received a briefing book about the historical and political events in Taiwan and participated in a State Department briefing before our departure. The purpose of this article is to share my impressions following this mission with my Louisville Community.

International Military Officials Tour Kentucky Air National Guard

KENTUCKY AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Military officials from five European countries toured the 123rd Airlift Wing Nov. 14 to learn about the Kentucky Air National Guard’s dual role of supporting both federal and state missions.

The group, which was comprised of military and government officials from Bulgaria, Hungary, Ireland, the Slovak Republic and the United Kingdom, participated in the tour as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program. The program was created by the U.S. State Department to develop stronger relations with the international community, said Eran Huber of the World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, which coordinated the local visit.
